Description
Coiled Tubing Quad BOP
BOP (Blowout Preventer), for coiled tubing operations is to provide a safety mechanism that controls and prevents uncontrolled releases of fluids or gas (blowouts) from the wellbore during operations. It ensures the safety of personnel, equipment, and the environment by:
Well Control: The BOP is used to isolate the wellbore in the event of a sudden pressure buildup, preventing the uncontrolled release of fluids or gases during coiled tubing operations.
Pressure Containment: It helps manage wellbore pressure, ESPecially when the well pressure exceeds the pressure applied by the coiled tubing, preventing dangerous blowouts.
Sealing: The BOP can seal off the well completely, either through a sealing element like rams or other mechanisms, providing a safe environment for crew and operations.
The BOP is a secondary well control barrier in the pressure control equipment stack-up. Besides isolating wellbore pressure during an emergency situation, it also provides a means of cutting or holding the CT string if required.
Movement of the CT string must be stopped when using any of the BOP functions.
There are various configurations of BOP, the most common ram functions are:
Blind function: isolate wellbore pressure by sealing the full bore
Shear function: shear (cut) CT string
Slip function: grip CT string and support weight
Pipe function: isolate wellbore pressure by sealing around annulus of CT string.
We can find 3 types of BOP:
- Single
- Combi
- Quad
